Lights

Lights. LED lights have been a terrific boon for bikes as they are bright and long lasting. You need white lights on the front of your bike and red lights on the rear. Consider mounting a white light on your helmet. That way, at an intersection when you turn your head sideways to see if a car is coming, the car can also see you.

Bells, Horns, and HEY!s

Bells, horns, and HEY!s. A bell or other noise making device is also mandatory in British Columbia. Bells may be useful for signaling to other cyclists or pedestrians, but they are almost useless against motor vehicles. Some cyclists use a loud horn that can be heard by drivers, but just as effective can be a loudly (really loudly) shouted “HEY!”. It's a short percussive sound that can penetrate through auto glass an be heard by drivers. Women might want to practice bellowing it out in the lower end of their register for greater effect.

Keep Your Bike In Good Working Order

Keep your bike in good working order. Make sure your brakes work properly so that you have the stopping power you need. Make sure dérailleurs are properly adjusted so your chain doesn't come off as you change gears, possibly causing an accident. Keep your tire properly inflated. If you can't do these things yourself, get a professional to do it. Or take a course, or take advantage of expert assistance as you learn to do it yourself at Our Community Bikes.

Feel free to download our pamphlet (pdf) How to Coddle and Care for Your Bicycle
