Bells, horns, and HEY!s. A bell or other noise making device is also mandatory in British Columbia. Bells may be useful for signaling to other cyclists or pedestrians, but they are almost useless against motor vehicles. Some cyclists use a loud horn that can be heard by drivers, but just as effective can be a loudly (really loudly) shouted “HEY!”. It's a short percussive sound that can penetrate through auto glass an be heard by drivers. Women might want to practice bellowing it out in the lower end of their register for greater effect.
