Use a mirror. Mirrors make life a lot easier for cyclists. While you still need to shoulder check on both sides before turning or changing lanes, a mirror can give that extra advantage of knowing what’s coming up or when it might be clear. Mirrors are a personal thing. Some like handlebar mounted mirrors, some like side mounted mirrors that protrude from the end of the handlebars, while still others like a mirror on their helmet. Try out some different styles on your friends’ bikes and pick one that suits you. Once you get used to having it, you’ll miss it if it’s gone.
