Respect Bike Boxes

Bike boxes--painted areas with bike symbols that extend to the left of a bike lane at intersections--are relatively new to the lower mainland, and many drivers seem to not see them or know what they are for.

The purpose of bike boxes is to allow cyclists to position themselves ahead of vehicle traffic at an intersection. When the light changes, cyclists can then proceed comfortably ahead of other traffic. Positioning cyclists ahead of motor vehicles is a key element in reducing accidents at intersections. If a bike box is empty when you arrive at an intersection, please leave it that way. Get in the habit of stopping behind the markings even if no bikes are present. You never know if one will arrive.
